Drivers License: Unrestricted state Drivers License. ~AND~Specialized Experience: GS-6 requires: One (1) year of specialized experience in active police work that that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience must have been equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in Federal service, and may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Examples of specialized experience include: Extensive experience providing all facets of law enforcement as a police officer in a medical center or hospital facility, or as a military police officer, or in law enforcement with another Federal, State or municipal agency; demonstrating excellent abilities and skills related to preventing, resolving and conducting preliminary and long term investigations ranging from simple infractions to violent crimes and felonies; extensive experience in distinguishing/ properly classifying criminal or civil violations; making arrests and performing booking procedures; issuing citations; seeking, collecting and protecting evidence; analyzing facts to identify suspects and developing case information; writing police offense reports, investigative reports, police program reports, taking written statements from witnesses and suspects; interviewing and interrogating witnesses and suspects; extensive experience testifying in court and assisting prosecutors in organizing prosecution cases. Physical Standards: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, walking while on patrol, and running while pursuing observed violators or suspects and eloping committed patients, crouching or crawling in restrictive areas during search and standing for prolonged periods of time, physical contact with combative subjects, frequent exposure to inclement weather conditions, such as rain and extreme cold in winter and extreme heat in the summer while outside on patrol. Will at times use extreme physical exertion to restrain felons or psychotic patients in a safe manner. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the US Government. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory Firearm Qualification. New VA Police Officers are required to attend an 12-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty. Failure of this course may be grounds for termination. Applicants must possess a valid, State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely.
